General FAQs

How does online learning work?

K12 Private Academy combines the flexibility of an online platform with the strong curriculum of a private school. This creates a learning environment that’s equitable and accessible to students from around the globe, at any age. To attend our online school, a student only needs access to the internet.

Is K12 Private Academy accredited?

Absolutely! K12 Private Academy is accredited, approved, and licensed by the following organizations:

  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI)
  • CogniaTM
  • National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

We believe that students have the right to a quality education that is recognized by institutions and organizations once they leave school. Our accredited online private school can provide exactly that type of high-caliber education. As an accredited school, K12 Private Academy offers courses and a U.S. high school diploma that is accepted by schools, colleges, universities, and employers.

Does K12 PA offer NCAA-approved courses?

K12 Private Academy is recognized by the NCAA, meaning that courses taken with us can count toward the academic requirements needed to go on to be a college athlete.

Further requirements for Division I, Division II, and Division III vary and can be found on the NCAA website.

What does curriculum “by K12” mean?

K12 Private Academy uses the K12 online learning platform, tailoring their high-quality curriculum and extensive resources to meet our students’ unique needs no matter where they may live.

K12 has been delivering online education for more than 25 years and is used in more than one hundred online schools across the USA. We’re proud to be one of them!

What grades does K12 Private Academy offer?

K12 PA offers full-time enrollment for students in grades Pre K–12. Some of our students enroll in pre-K and spend their whole school career with us, while others may need to enroll for a semester or two to catch up on credits. We also offer supplemental and additional education through summer school or individual course enrollment.

We love seeing our students grow and discover their strengths!

What subjects will my child study?

Each grade in private online school includes core and elective subjects to choose from. These classes are shaped in a way that provides a comprehensive overview of valuable lessons that help prepare students for the years ahead.

Appropriate to each age group, these lessons challenge students to examine topics in depth to discover and perfect critical thinking skills. Each class is designed to promote the sharing of ideas and encourages collaboration with peers.

Does K12 PA provide textbooks and other instructional materials for my student?

Yes, K12 Private Academy provides textbooks and instructional materials for students. These books and materials vary based on the student’s grade level and the courses they’re enrolled in. For instance, our high school students receive fewer books and materials than elementary and middle school students.

Can my child work at their own pace at K12 Private Academy?

Our program is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing students and Learning Coaches to choose a start date that works best for their individual needs. We offer multiple enrollment start dates throughout the school year, giving families more options to begin their learning journey.

Flexibility continues throughout the year as well. Our Pre-K and Elementary programs are paced based on lesson completion, allowing families to progress at a comfortable pace. Middle and High School students have additional flexibility within each semester, with established midpoint and end-of-term deadlines to help them stay on track while managing their own schedules.

What is my role as a parent in supporting my child’s online learning?

At K12 Private Academy, we believe in the power of family involvement. As a parent, you are an essential part of your child’s learning experience—whether you take on the role of Learning Coach yourself or designate a trusted adult to support your child day to day. The Learning Coach helps keep students on track, encourages them to engage in lessons, and partners with teachers to support academic progress. Even if you’re not the one logging in every day, your involvement and support are key to your child’s success.

How much time do students spend on the computer? How much time will I need to dedicate to support my child’s education?

Your involvement as a parent or Learning Coach will vary by grade level, your child’s needs, and your family’s schedule. As your child becomes more comfortable with online learning, they’ll develop greater independence, giving you more flexibility. On average:

Do you provide curriculum for students with special needs?

K12 Private Academy welcomes students with a wide range of learning needs and offers flexible options to help each student find success. As a private school, we do not provide IEPs or special education services as you might find through the public school system; however, we recognize that students learn differently and may benefit from additional support, structure, and individualized attention.

Can K12 PA accommodate the accelerated learning needs of my gifted/talented child?

The beauty of our pre-k and elementary program is that it is flexible enough to meet children where they are in any given subject and take them where they want to go. For grades 6–12, grade placement assessments are completed as part of the enrollment process, allowing us to place your student at the appropriate level of curriculum. So, for example, if your sixth grader is doing math on an eighth-grade level and reading on a sixth-grade level, we can tailor lesson plans to meet your student’s abilities.

How will my child socialize and make friends in an online school?

Will my child have the same graduation opportunities as students in traditional public schools?

What is K12 Private Academy’s policy on bullying?

K12 Private Academy is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all students. Because our learning environment is online, students are able to learn outside of many of the social pressures and physical challenges that can occur in a traditional school setting; however, we recognize that respectful interactions and student safety remain a priority.

Bullying, harassment, intimidation, and inappropriate behavior are not tolerated at K12 Private Academy. Our Student Code of Conduct outlines expectations for respectful communication and interactions among students, families, teachers, and staff. This includes addressing behaviors such as threats, repeated unwanted communication, social exclusion, intimidation, cyberbullying, and other actions that disrupt a positive learning environment. Students and families are encouraged to report concerns to their teacher, counselor, or school administration so the school can investigate and take appropriate steps to address the situation.

How long does K12 PA keep student records?

K12 Private Academy maintains student records in accordance with applicable privacy requirements and school policies. Student records, including academic history and enrollment information, are securely maintained and are available to authorized individuals, including parents/guardians and students, as appropriate.
