K12 PA Teacher Spotlight: Pam Dooley
Empowering Future Innovators: Meet K12 Private Academy Tech Teacher Pam Dooley
For the last four years, Pam Dooley has helped shape cybersecurity education at K12 Private Academy (K12 PA). With over two decades of experience in online teaching, and 10 years with K12, she brings a mix of passion, creativity, and a strong commitment to guiding students toward meaningful futures in technology. Her journey reflects why she remains an essential part of the K12 PA community.
A Career Rooted in Innovation
Pam’s experience in online learning began over 20 years ago. After retiring from traditional classroom teaching a few years later, K12 invited her to return to online education, and she embraced the opportunity.
For the past decade, Pam has served as the Technology Teacher at K12 Private Academy. She primarily teaches high school students and occasionally supports middle school learners as well. Her work is centered on a simple belief: students should leave her courses feeling confident about their future and equipped with industry-recognized skills.
Leading the Way in Cybersecurity Education
One of the most defining parts of Pam’s career is her role in expanding cybersecurity education at K12 Private Academy. When K12 introduced new cybersecurity courses, Pam eagerly jumped in, even though she did not have a strong background in the subject at the time.
Her curiosity led her to an online graduate program in cybersecurity. She spent three summers completing coursework and collaborating with other educators and college students. Together, they created a project-based teaching aid focused on secure database design.
Pam’s contribution was the development of intentionally flawed databases that challenged students to identify issues, troubleshoot problems, and implement security solutions. The project was later accepted for publication and presented at the NICE K12 Conference in Sacramento, an event dedicated to advancing cybersecurity education.
Flexibility That Fuels Connection
When asked what she enjoys most about online teaching, Pam highlights,
“What I like the most about teaching online is its flexibility. I have children that live in four different states, and so I like to go visit my kids. And it’s nice. I just grab my laptop and off I go, and I work in the mornings and then visit with my kids in the afternoons.”
Pam sees this flexibility benefit her students as well,
“I like that my students can work at their own pace, as long as they are still understanding the material. I’ve got a lot of kids that will work way ahead, then I’ve got students that need more assistance. Those students can pop online and come in to ask questions.”
Supporting Students Through Hands on Cyber Learning
As one of the cybersecurity teachers at K12, and the only teacher full-time, Pam teaches more than 30 technology courses, and her cybersecurity curriculum is especially engaging. Students regularly:
- Watch video lessons
- Explore networking fundamentals
- Work with virtual machines
- Participate in discussion forums
- Create videos, presentations, and written reports
- Engage in the K12 Zone to discuss coursework and career goals
These learning experiences prepare students for industry certifications and introduce them to a wide range of opportunities in cybersecurity, a field with rapidly growing career demand.
A Teacher Who Goes Above and Beyond
Pam is known not only for her expertise but also for her compassion and willingness to help both colleagues and students.
“Our administrators are fabulous. I went through a really bad time a couple of years ago. I lost my husband and my mother within a week, and they were there for me. They were covering my classes and even took up a collection and sent me online food deliveries. That’s amazing.”
To Pam, her coworkers feel more like close friends than colleagues.
Her dedication extends beyond the classroom. During K12’s transition to the Canvas learning platform, Pam worked on developing new workflows and efficiencies to help streamline processes and shared them with teachers throughout the school. She enjoys learning new things and says these projects help keep her mind sharp.
Advice for Teachers Considering Online Education
Pam is a strong advocate for online teaching, especially for retired educators who want meaningful work with more flexibility. She shared:
“I am constantly in groups on Facebook talking to teachers and telling them about our program, the flexibility in it and the support that we get.”
She often recommends it because of the strong support system at Stride K12, the collaborative community, the balanced workload, and the opportunity to continue making a positive impact while maintaining personal freedom.
For Pam, online education was not just another job. It became the ideal continuation of her passion for teaching.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Cyber Professionals
At the center of Pam’s work is one clear goal: helping students make informed decisions about their futures.
She added, “I’m hoping my students take what they’ve learned to help them make a decision on their own career path.”
Through her dedication to cybersecurity education, her innovative teaching style, and her genuine care for students, Pam Dooley reflects the mission of K12 Private Academy. She empowers learners to explore, grow, and prepare for the careers of tomorrow.
